Can they go together?
I've been apart for a video sharing social network since October 2008, and up until the end on 09 it was a fun place to be, lots of silly videos meant for the fun of it, and serious issues ment to be discussed, i personally have over 320 videos (vlogs, of the silly kind) and used to spend an unsociable amount of time there, i consider friends there to be, well Friends.
Recently the site creators have been trying to develop a "democracy", they've even gone as far as to set up a constitution, now far be it from me to say that its going just a little to far, the site is part of the Ning network, which already has a Terms of Service which dictates the way its used, why the politics?, plus you have to be a "citizen" in order to vote on the community advocate position.
Its all a bit to serious for a social network, Social networks are a place for people to interact with others online, shouldn't it there for be a fun place, where we can piss about, discuss issues concerning us privately or personally, and debate world issues, under the terms of service, which you have to agree to before joining, and now, because its considered a community, their have introduced Politics, in which every three months the "Citizens" vote on a site advocate, who is supposed to liaise with the site admins and moderators on the members behalf, by discussing site issues with them, but he seems to be making these decisions for us, also, the current site advocate said in a blog that;
"In case you thought that "politics and democracy and all that BS", as the more dim witted among the cherished citizens of VH care to call the implementation of self-administration here, is over, well you're wrong"
For me its not so much the name calling from the man in charge, but rather the fact that he seems to think that those of us who don't really care about the "politics and democracy" on a social networking website, those of us that think it courses more drama then would exist without it, are Dim Witted.
Whats worse, not wanting to deal with politics on a social networking WEBSITE, or thinking that politics on a social networking WEBSITE is actually important. You decide.
Me, well this is what i think,
